K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base is a former United States Air Force base that is located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, about 16 miles south of the city of Marquette. The base was originally established as an Air Defense Command (ADC) base in 1955, and it was named after K. I. Sawyer, a former commander of the Strategic Air Command.
The base was an integral part of the nation’s defense system during the Cold War, and it was home to various units and aircraft, including the 62nd Fighter Interceptor Squadron and the 644th Bombardment Squadron. The base was also equipped with strategic nuclear capabilities and served as a key location for the United States’ air defense network.
In addition to its military operations, K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base was also an important economic and social hub for the surrounding area. The base employed thousands of military personnel and civilians, and it provided a significant boost to the local economy. The base also had a variety of facilities and amenities, including housing, schools, and recreational areas for the personnel and their families.
However, as the Cold War came to an end, the strategic importance of K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base diminished, and the base was eventually decommissioned in 1995. Since then, the base has been redeveloped into the Sawyer International Airport, a public airport that serves the Marquette area. The airport has maintained some of the original infrastructure and facilities from the air force base, including the large runway and some of the former military buildings.
Today, K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base is a part of the National Register of Historic Places, and it continues to be an important part of the local community’s history. The airport also plays a vital role in the region’s transportation network, providing essential air travel services to residents and businesses in the Upper Peninsula.
