Captain James Cook was a British explorer and navigator who is credited with exploring and mapping many of the Pacific Islands, including Hawaii. In 1779, Cook returned to Hawaii for a second visit. This time, his reception was far less hospitable. Tensions between the Hawaiians and the Europeans had reached a boiling point, and a skirmish broke out between Cook’s crew and the native people. Cook was killed during the altercation, marking the end of his explorations in the Pacific.
